The Outstanding Tiny Desk AI template, shot by shot

Updated October 27, 2026

Every Outstanding Tiny Desk AI video uses the same template: the vertical viral cut of Charlie Wilson's NPR Tiny Desk closer, about 18 seconds, with The Gap Band's "Outstanding" on top. Here's what's in it and where each person shows up.

The four shots

These stills are from the original clip. In yours, the people you add take their spots, and every spot you leave alone keeps the coach from the viral video.

  1. 0:00–0:05Band
  2. 0:05–0:12Big laugh
  3. 0:12–0:15Sax solo
  4. 0:15–0:18Band again

Which spots you fill

TimeShotWho's on screen
0:00–0:05BandKeys, backing vocals left and right
0:05–0:12Big laughLead vocals (the Charlie Wilson part)
0:12–0:15Sax soloSax, with keys peeking in
0:15–0:18Band againKeys, backing vocals left and right

So lead vocals get the big close-up, sax gets the solo, and keys plus the two backing singers appear in both band shots. One person or five costs the same.

Why it starts on the band shot

The viral version opens with 1.4 seconds of the lead singer in side profile. A face swap can't hold up on a side profile, so the template starts on the band shot, where every face is turned to the camera, and keeps the rest of the cut as it is.

Template questions

Is the Outstanding Tiny Desk AI template free?

CapCut templates for the trend are free to use, but they only give you the cuts and the song: they don't put a face into the singing performance. Tiny Desk AI does the AI part for $8.99 a video.

Can I change the song or the cuts?

No. The template is the viral cut with the original song, because that is what people recognise. You choose who is in it, not how it is edited.

Do I need CapCut or an editing app?

No. Upload photos on the stage, press make, and download the finished MP4 with the song and a silent copy.

Who should go on lead vocals?

The person the video is about: this week’s losing head coach, your rival’s star, or you. Lead vocals get the longest and closest shot, about 6 seconds of the big laugh.

Can I fill only some of the spots?

Yes. Any 1 to 5 spots, same price. Empty spots keep the coach from the viral video, and shots with nobody swapped play as they are.
